Frequently Asked Questions

The winter season runs September through March. Duskys, Silver and Gold start in September and Spinners and Strypers start in October. After a month-long break, more than half of the team trains in the spring and then slides into a competitive summer program, usually ending in August.

We compete in about 20 meets over the Winter and Spring/Summer seasons, almost all on weekends. YMCA league meets are afternoon events of 2 to 4 hours and are perfect for first-timers. USA Swimming invitationals run 1 to 3 days, usually at UVAC and WPI, no more than 80 minutes from Keene. End-of-season championship meets are required for every swimmer who qualifies.

Practices are weekday afternoons and evenings at the Keene Family YMCA, between 4:15 and 7:00. The number of practices depends on your swimmer's group, from two days a week for Spinners and Strypers to every practice for Gold. The full schedule is on the Practice Schedule page under Practices.

Yes. To join Spinners, our first team group, a swimmer should be able to swim 100 yards of freestyle without grabbing the lane lines or stopping, swim legal freestyle and backstroke, back float, and dive in from a sitting or kneeling position. Swimmers who aren't there yet are referred to Swim Lessons or Jr. Dolphins. We love love love new swimmers! Even at older ages.

Swim team tuition is a fee for the whole season, not for each month of activity. You can pay it in one lump sum or spread it over the season in monthly payments withdrawn from your YMCA account. Meet fees for USA meets and larger invitationals are billed separately. Every team member must also be a member of the Keene Family YMCA and register with USA Swimming.

Parents may observe Spinners practices. Strypers, Duskys, Silver and Gold practices are closed practices, so the pool deck is closed to parents and guardians during those times.
